What Are SIPs Panels? Why Structural Insulated Panels Build Better Homes

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) being raised into place on a Struxa home

If you are planning a new home or backyard ADU, you will hear the term SIPs a lot. SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) are one of the most efficient ways to build a home today, and they are the foundation of every Struxa build. Here is what they are, how they work, and why they matter for your comfort, your energy bills and your timeline.

What are SIPs panels?

A SIPs panel is a sandwich. Two structural boards form the outside layers, and a thick core of rigid foam insulation is bonded between them. The result is one solid panel that is both the frame and the insulation of your wall or roof.

In a traditional home, builders put up a wooden frame, then fill the gaps between the studs with insulation, then add sheathing. A SIPs home skips those separate steps. Each panel is cut to exact measurements in a factory, delivered to your site, and fitted together like a precise puzzle.

5 benefits of building with SIPs

1. Lower energy bills

In a stick-built wall, every wood stud is a small gap in the insulation where heat escapes. A SIPs wall has a continuous foam core with very few of those gaps, and the panels seal tightly together. That tight shell keeps cool air in during California summers and warm air in on cold nights, so your HVAC system works less.

2. Faster construction

Because the panels arrive pre-cut, the structural shell of a home can go up in days. Less time on site means less weather risk, less labor cost and a much shorter wait for your keys. It is a big reason Struxa can deliver turnkey homes in 1 to 3 months.

3. Strength

SIPs act like an engineered beam across the whole wall, not just at the studs. They are designed and engineered to meet California building codes, including seismic and wind requirements.

4. Quieter, more comfortable rooms

The dense foam core and tight seams reduce drafts and outside noise. Rooms stay at an even temperature from floor to ceiling, without the cold spots common in older homes.

5. Less waste

Panels are cut by machine to the exact plan, so far less material ends up in a dumpster. Your build site stays cleaner, and the process is kinder to the environment.

Are SIPs right for an ADU?

SIPs are an especially good fit for ADUs. Backyard sites are often tight, and SIPs panels can be carried in and assembled where a full modular box cannot reach. The small footprint of an ADU also benefits most from a well-sealed shell, since every square foot counts. Learn more in our complete guide to prefab ADUs in California.

Frequently asked questions

How long do SIPs homes last? A properly designed and installed SIPs home is built to last as long as any well-built conventional home. Good roofing, flashing and moisture detailing protect it for decades.

Are SIPs homes fire resistant? SIPs homes are finished with code-required fire-rated materials such as drywall inside and fire-resistant cladding outside. In California wildfire zones, the whole assembly must meet local fire codes, and your builder designs for that.

Can I still have big windows and an open layout? Yes. Openings for large windows and doors are planned into the panels, and SIPs roofs allow vaulted ceilings without extra framing.

Do SIPs cost more? The panels themselves can cost more than lumber, but faster assembly, lower labor and lower energy bills usually close the gap. See How Much Does a Prefab ADU Cost in California?
